Hi Guys

There are a couple of options here:

1 - If you are already tethered Jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1. Then all you would need to do is install Corona from Cydia. Once installed and rebooted (or respring), you are fully untethered.

But most of us, need to use Redsn0w after updating to 5.0.1

Ingredients

- Get your iOS 5.0.1 IPSW firmware from here: http://www.icj.me/ios - BE SURE TO SELECT CORRECT DEVICE!!!

- Latest iTunes (v10.5.2.13)

For A4 iDevices
- Redsn0w v0.9.10b4 - from here https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.10b3.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

For A5 iDevices
- Absinthe for Windows - from here http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-win-0.2.zip

Backing Up

Before updating any firmware, I always do a full backup in iTunes (mine goes to the cloud), then I do a Sync also, and take note of my Cydia apps, etc.

Updating

1. Update your iOS by plugging your iDevice into your PC and holding down shift and then clicking the restore button.

2. Point iTunes to wherever you saved the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW.

3. iTunes will proceed to update your firmware.

You could potentially become stuck here and be faced with multiple error codes (if you jailbreak a lot). You will need to close iTunes, and then delete the Hosts file which can be found here:

C:WindowsSystem32driversetc - and delete the "HOSTS" file.

Restart your PC, just to ensure that it will work. Restart iTunes, and start from number 1 again.

4. After iTunes has updated your iDevice, it will reboot the iDevice. Once it has booted, it will ask you to begin setting up the iDevice as if it was new.

Obviously, we have a restore that we just did prior to the update, so begin to restore from that.

5. Your phone should be back to how it was before we updated, without the Jailbreak stuff of course. Thats next....

Jailbreaking A4 iDevices

1. Firstly unzip the Redsn0w app.

2. Put your phone into DFU mode by doing this:

Holding both the Home Button and the Sleep Button, let go of the Sleep Button when the screen goes blank (around 10 seconds), continue to hold the Home Button for another 5-10 seconds.

Your iDevice should be in a DFU state, black screen, looks dead.

3. Now begin redsn0w.

4. Click the following:

- Jailbreak
- Next
- Install Cydia

Then follow the steps.

5. Redsn0w will proceed to jailbreak your iDevice, the Pineapple is a good sign Wink

6. When finished, the iDevice will reboot, and Cydia should be on your home screen.

7. Proceed as normal.

Jailbreaking A5 iDevices

1. Unzip Absinthe

2. Plug in iDevice

3. Start Absinthe, and follow the onscreen instructions.

4. Done! (yes very easy)

For TETHERED JAILBREAKING has gotten a little easier with SemiTether. Please see my Blog post link, for methods of Jailbreaking, SemiTether and also a list of compatible iOS5 Cydia apps.

:O You haven't updated? Wow! iOS 5 is amazing! Though, if you prefer Jailbreak I guess it is another case Tongue I downloaded Cydia and tried Jailbreaking, but... I deleted it within a day or so.

I have ios5 on my 3gs, and its amazing!!! I honestly dont know why anyone would want to jailbreak the new ios besides getting rid of newstand!!! Hate that! The semitether by bigboss has a bunch of reported problems and having to "boot tethered" is a bunch of crap imo! Cydia is nice to have, but the functionality of 5 is great!!! When its an untethered jailbreak ill try it out to see if anyone has done anything worth having for me

I havent heard of any problems persay, but it was lightening fast at first. Kind of slowed down some, and the mobile safari seems a little buggy, but i havent seen any updates yet so it must be somewhat all good huh?

I like it alot, i think all my little issues are more processor based than actual bugs...but all in all im in love

I updated my 4G on iOS 5, and it is working wonderfully. Just one thing, phone slows down when multiple programmes are open, and i have had a couple of crashes, but other than that, iOS 5 is cool. I have seen the semitethered version in action, and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone yet. Safari gets bugs, and there are issues when you reboot the device. So i am still waiting for a untethered jailbreak Smiley

Might as well wait to jb since apple announced that there will be a 5.0.1 update in a couple weeks to address some small issues, one being battery life, that from the initial update was suppose to increase battery life... Makes me wonder.......

Hi Guys

The untethered should available soon, pod2g (one of the iOS devs) recommends staying on iOS5 and not updating to 5.0.1.

5.0.1 is already jailbroke (tethered) using the methods already mentioned here. I believe that you will need to be on iOS5 for an untethered, as 5.0.1 fixes a vulnerability that was exposed by Charlie Miller during the week, which will greatly help to untether.

The battery fix and other fixes in iOS 5.0.1 will be released in Cydia very soon.

Take care (and please be patient).
